Write On!

Dear Debbie,
“I’ve always wondered what my handwriting will reveal! …give me the good and the bad! We need these for growth.” …E

“What is the most rigorous law of our being? Growth. No smallest atom or our moral, mental, or physical structure can stand still a year.”

- Mark Twain (1835-1910) U.S. Author

Dear E,

I couldn’t agree with you more. Knowing the “good and the bad” about ourselves can help us more fully express the positive and provide an opportunity to reflect and change those traits that stand in our way.

Your writing is very pleasing to the eye with its consistent slant and spacing, well-formed letters, fairly proportionate capitals, and a few flourished strokes. This combination of factors reveals your appreciation of beauty in line and perspective. An interest in the cultural and literary world can be seen in the Greek E structures (see reversed E shape in lowercase letter r) appearing throughout this sample.

This aesthetic value is supported by the lack of emphasis in the lower zone of writing. This area reflects an individual’s social structure, practical and material concerns, as well as past experience. Material things are not important to you. Your interests lie more in the abstract and applying concepts to your day-to-day living.

Most of your lower loop letters end as a quickly fading downstroke, revealing a lack of determination. When confronted with difficulties, you become distracted and may easily abandon one task for another. To give actual form to an idea requires one to refer to acquired experience and knowledge. This is an area you tend to avoid, preferring to focus on the present rather than the past.

A variety of t-crossings reveal a number of attitudes about goals. Sharply pointed t-bars indicate sarcasm. Floating above the stem places them out of reach and the lighter the stroke, the less energy directed at accomplishment. A t-bar left of the stem is a sign of procrastination; to the right indicates temper; and those pointed downward reveal a demanding character. Note that these are all very light strokes revealing little force, therefore your demands are not very demanding and your sarcasm generally has little bite.

The lightness of the line, written with little pressure on the pen tells me that emotional experiences do not make lasting impressions on you. What may have ticked you off in the morning is long gone by afternoon. This feeling of lightness can also be reflected in your surroundings by the furnishings and colors that you choose.

If you find yourself unmotivated or easily distracted, you might try re-energizing by setting and accomplishing smaller, more short term goals. Acknowledging your accomplishments, big or small, can give you the connectedness you need to move on. Spiritual and emotional growth requires self-reflection. Sometimes, you have to look at where you’ve been to know where you’re going.

Thanks for writing!
