Namasté [nah-mah-stay] is a Sanskrit word used as a salutation of respect and reverence. There are variations on the translation but the essence is the same: the spirit within me bows to the spirit within you. (Namas meaning bow, te meaning you.) That spirit of love and light, a divine spark within each of us, is located in the heart space. The gesture is one of recognition, without judgment, of the soul in one by the soul in another as if to say, "I see you." It embodies the idea that we are all spiritual beings sharing in this earthly experience.

Bring your hands together in front of your heart (or at the brow level, then to your heart), palms pressing softly into each other, fingers touching and pointing upward. Bow your head and say namasté or let the gesture imply it.

Consider the many ways to honor this concept. When you see your reflection, be reminded of your spirit and its intention throughout the day. In a crowd of people, or in times of tension, you might simply close your eyes briefly as you bow slightly to those around you—a silent and subtle acceptance of their journey. Take a deep breath as you do and breathe out a glow of love, honor, and appreciation.

It only takes a moment to deeply acknowledge that the divine light in you is also in everyone else.
