National Handwriting Day is January 23rd, reminding us of the power of the handwritten word. Studies show that people who write everything by hand tend to have more confidence and a strong memory; they learn more quickly and have improved cognitive skills.*
In other words, writing by hand improves brain function. It’s a superpower!

So what if you hardly ever use a pen but want some of these benefits? Try writing more often. Here are a few ideas:
Start a journal and write out your ideas.
Hand write your grocery and to-do lists.
End your day with a writing exercise to describe what went right today or those things that you are grateful for.
Start your day with an optimism exercise. Write about how your work day, relationships, classes, or projects will proceed. Note your positive attributes that can make it all easier.
Find a pen pal! Could be a friend, relative, or a potential new friend.
Stream of consciousness writing. I call it free-writing. Use all your words!
No editing. Write out an idea or a problem with the intention of discovering a solution.
Put up a white board and organize your thoughts, or write quotations, affirmations, and positive thoughts for the day.
Have fun with this! It’s not going to be graded. Spelling doesn’t count. It doesn’t even have to look good. It’s just for you and to get those brain cells buzzing.
